Belgrade Temple of Saint Sava
Temple of Saint Sava, Belgrade, Serbia - 2022 Danube River cruise. The Temple of Saint Sava is the largest Orthodox Church in Serbia.
And is dedicated to Saint Sava the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church. It is built on the presumed location of St. Sava's grave.
The construction of the current temple began in 1935 but was stopped in 1941 due to the Second World War. Construction was not restarted until 1985. In 1989 the central dome was put in place and by 2004 the main structure of the temple was completed. It then took until 2020 to complete the interior mosaics which cover 15,000 square meters, and involved 300 artists and craftspeople.
